As JFK Middle School begins the first month with access to chromebooks, students can be seen importing science data into spreadsheets and graphing their scientific research while examining live reference samples of the macroninvertebrate concentrations found in local pond water. Students in grade 7 science classes were tasked with determining which of their pond water samples were less polluted after examining water quality levels and the macroinvertebrates found in the two samples. Using microscopes, pipets, charts of organisms and chromebooks, students formed educated decisions about which sample provided a cleaner environment for swimming. Tying into their community, students then constructed persuasive letters to the Northampton Recreation Department with their findings–arguing their case for which body of water would be the next best location for a swimming spot.
